About the Programme

The discipline of Cultural Studies seeks to understand the complexity of culture and its political uses. The aim of the minor in Cultural Studies is to introduce students to the study of culture as an important area of study and research and, by so doing, promote a deeper understanding of Caribbean culture and identity.                           

What Will I Study?

In the course of study, students will:
  • Study and document the historical range and diversity of Caribbean people and their cultures.      
  • Examine the many facets of Caribbean cultural expression in an interdisciplinary context and from a variety of theoretical perspectives.
  • Explore the relationships betwen Caribbean culture and the social and political developments of the region.
  • Analyse the uses and abuses of the Caribbean's cultural heritage in the economic development of the region and its people.
  • Promote the study of nation and identity as defined by cultural history.
  • Critique the formation and existence of gender hierarchies in the Caribbean and its impact on Caribbean cultures.

Programme Details

For the Minor in Cultural Studies, students will be required to complete six (6) courses or eighteen (18) credits as follows. Each course listed is worth 3 credits.

LEVEL  I 
1. CLTR1100 Culture and Identity (compulsory)

LEVEL II
2. CLTR2500 Introduction to Caribbean Cultural Studies (compulsory)

3 - 4. TWO (2) of the following courses:

  • CLTR2000 Thinking Culture: Debates and Perspectives
  • CLTR 2010 Global Media and Caribbean Culture
  • CLTR2050 Aspects of Brazilian Culture II OR CLTR2055 Contemporary Brazilian Culture
  • CLTR2100 Festivals, Rituals and Caribbean Society
  • CLTR2401 Popular Culture and Consciousness in 20th Century South Africa
LEVEL III
5. CLTR3100 Theorising Caribbean Culture (compulsory)

6. ONE (1) of the following courses:

  • CLTR3101 Race, Nationalism and Culture
  • CLTR3102 Exhibiting Culture: Representation,Tourism and Heritage
  • CLTR3103 Black Popular Culture
  • CLTR3110 The Sacred Arts of the Black Atlantic
  • CLTR3500 Discourses in Cultural Studies
  • LITS3405 Caribbean Popular Culture II

The Minor in Cultural Studies must be taken alongside a Major. To add this Minor to your programme, you should complete a 'Change of Option' form for your Faculty and submit to your Dean for approval.
