The Department of Biological and Chemical Sciences houses a variety of research programmes in Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, Ecology, Environmental Sciences and Microbiology. Both Undergraduate and Postgraduate research in these and related areas are supported.

The Cave Hill Campus Bioenergy & Biofuel Research & Development Project focuses on biochemically producing various types of biofuel. The program has a heavy focus in biochemistry (particularly microbial biochemistry) and investigates the use of biochemical conversions for biofuel production.
Undergraduate research projects offered and supervised by faculty members are supported during the semester and in the summer. Undergraduate projects are often part of ongoing research programmes, but give students the opportunity to experience genuine research before completing their BSc.
