A Leader in Tropical Forest Ecology and Community-Driven Conservation
Dr. Arneaud's research interests are as diverse as they are impactful. With a particular focus on tropical forest ecology, mangroves, community-based ecological management and endemic plant species, his work emphasizes the global significance of tropical ecosystems and the urgent need for their preservation. For over a decade, Dr. Arneaud has conducted impactful research on the tropical ecology of arborescent palms, contributing to their global conservation efforts. His role as a reviewer for palm-related journals further highlights his expertise in this specialized area.

His research is not confined to the academic world. Dr. Arneaud has made substantial contributions to several community-driven projects that combine scientific knowledge with sustainable resource management. His work integrates both local knowledge and scientific principles to ensure that communities are empowered to manage and protect their natural resources.

Contributing on the Global Stage
Dr. Arneaud is also a distinguished member of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Commission on Ecosystem Management. He has actively contributed to numerous committees, including the Blue Ventures: Beyond Conservation - Mangrove Working Group, the Environmental Sensitive Species and Areas (ESSA) Management Advisory Committee of Trinidad and Tobago, and the Trinidad and Tobago National Biodiversity Strategies & Action Plans (NBSAPs). Through these roles, Dr. Arneaud has influenced international policies and strategies for ecosystem management, biodiversity conservation, and the sustainable use of natural resources.

In addition, Dr. Arneaud is a key member of several IUCN CEM thematic groups, including those focused on Nature-Based Solutions, Ecosystem Restoration and Red Listing of Ecosystems. His leadership within these groups underscores his integral role in shaping global conservation efforts, particularly in the Caribbean and Central American regions.

Local Outreach and Advocacy for Sustainable Development
Dr. Arneaud’s commitment to local environmental education is evident through his numerous outreach initiatives. He has worked tirelessly on the development of two (2) field guides: “Exotic and Native Palms of Barbados (in press) and “Trees of UWI Cave Hill Campus, Barbados (completed). These resources serve as invaluable tools for educating the public about local flora and promoting biodiversity conservation efforts on the island.

Dr. Arneaud’s philosophy on development is clear: “Development without sustainability is slow destruction”. His belief in the intersection of ecological health and human progress is rooted in a deep understanding of the delicate balance between nature and development. His commitment to this cause is exemplified in his role as the Vice President of the Trinidad & Tobago Field Naturalists’ Club (2021-2024) and his ongoing coordination of the Bioblitz Trinidad & Tobago since 2012.
