Celebrating FST Excellence: Meet Mr. Kirk Mayers
07/11/2024
In the vibrant tapestry of our Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) at The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus (UWI), we have many individuals who shine brightly, and one such individual is Mr. Kirk Mayers. A dedicated Senior Laboratory Technician in our Department of Biological & Chemical Sciences (BCS), Mr. Mayers has spent nearly two (2) decades contributing his expertise and passion to the academic community. His journey, marked by diligence and innovation, exemplifies the spirit of excellence we celebrate in our FST Staff Recognition Programme.

A Journey Rooted in Curiosity
Mr. Mayers began his academic path at The UWI in 2003, pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in the very department he now serves (i.e., the BCS Department). His time as an undergraduate student was not only focused on his studies; he actively engaged with the community, working part-time with the Caribbean Hotel Association and as a Field Assistant surveying and tagging trees for what would become the National Botanical Gardens. This blend of academic pursuit and practical experience laid a solid foundation for his future contributions.

In August 2006, just months before graduating, he stepped into the role of a Technician within the BCS Department, where he has since made an indelible mark.

Advancing Knowledge through Overseas Training
Mr. Mayers' commitment to his craft led him to the McCrone Research Institute in Chicago in June 2010, where he completed an intensive course on microscope maintenance and adjustment. This training empowered him with the skills to implement cost-effective practices that have greatly benefited the BCS Department. His certification not only highlights his dedication, but also his proactive approach to enhancing laboratory operations.

Innovations in Microscopy
Since returning from his training, Mr. Mayers has been instrumental in several key projects that have transformed the microscopy landscape within the BCS Department:

  1. Microscope Maintenance (2010 - Present): By taking on the responsibility for microscope maintenance, he has saved the BCS Department significant costs associated with overseas maintenance.
  2. Microscopy Manual (2010): Mr. Mayers compiled a detailed manual on the use and care of compound microscopes, enriched with original photographs. This document has since been integrated into laboratory manuals, making it accessible to students and enhancing their learning experience.
  3. Microscopy Kit (2011 - Present): Drawing on his training, he developed a unique microscopy kit that reduces chemical use while maintaining efficiency. This innovation demonstrates his commitment to sustainability and cost-effectiveness.
  4. Instructional Videos (2012 - Present): Mr. Mayers scripted and presented instructional videos on the use of microscopes and spectrophotometers. These resources have proven invaluable, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic when hands-on learning was restricted.

Inspiring the Next Generation
Beyond his laboratory contributions, Mr. Mayers is dedicated to fostering a love for science in younger generations. He has actively participated in outreach activities, including career days and science clubs at various primary schools. His engagement with students at the George Lamming, Eden Lodge, Good Shepherd, Selah and Ellerton Primary Schools reflects his belief in the importance of nurturing curiosity and passion for science from an early age.

A Personal Philosophy of Excellence
Mr. Mayers encapsulates his approach to work in a powerful personal statement: “Whatever you do, whatever your task may be, work from the soul, put in your absolute best effort.” This philosophy not only drives his daily tasks, but also inspires those around him to strive for excellence.

Conclusion
As we honour Mr. Kirk Mayers through our FST Staff Recognition Programme, we celebrate not only his professional achievements but also his unwavering commitment to education, innovation and community engagement. His journey from Student to Senior Technician serves as a beacon of inspiration, reminding us all of the profound impact one (1) individual can have in advancing science and fostering a love for learning. Congratulations Mr. Mayers, on your well-deserved recognition!
