Celebrating FST Excellence: Meet Ms. Natasha Corbin - A Trailblazer in Project Management and Academic Advancement in our Faculty of Science and Technology (FST)

In the bustling corridors of The University of the West Indies (UWI), Cave Hill Campus, one (1) name stands out for her unwavering dedication, impactful contributions and leadership in fostering academic excellence and sustainable development - Ms. Natasha Corbin. As the current Project Officer in our Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), Natasha's journey from a young professional to an influential figure in the University’s development story is nothing short of inspiring.



A Career Marked by Commitment and Excellence
Since joining The UWI Cave Hill Campus in 2001, Natasha has dedicated over two (2) decades of service to the University, building a distinguished career across various roles, all contributing to the growth and strategic direction of our Faculty of Science and Technology (FST). Natasha’s journey began in the Centre for Resource Management and Environmental Studies (CERMES), where she laid the foundation for her future career. Over the years, her portfolio expanded, with key positions such as Administrative Assistant (Projects & Planning), Project Coordinator and Project Manager for the DIREKT project. Today, she serves as the Project Officer for FST, working closely with departments within the Faculty, as well as on University-wide initiatives across campuses, including those of The UWI St. Augustine and Mona Campuses.

Through her work, Natasha has built a reputation for her strategic insight, remarkable organizational skills and her ability to secure and manage funding for high-impact projects. Her ability to navigate complex collaborations with both regional and international partners has resulted in over BDS$6 Million in secured funding for several ground-breaking projects that have greatly benefited the University and its stakeholders.

Leading Transformative Projects
Natasha’s portfolio of successful projects demonstrates her versatility and expertise in project management. A standout among these is the "Sargassum Products for Climate Resilience in the Caribbean" project, which received funding from the New Zealand Institute for Plant and Food Research Limited (PFR). The project, in collaboration with the Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism, has contributed to building resilience against climate change in the Caribbean, securing BDS$97,123.07 for critical research.

Other major projects that have left an indelible mark on the Faculty and University include:
  • The Main Administration Smart Building Project: A significant initiative funded by the IDB, KEPCO, AnyGate and the Government of Barbados, with a budget of BDS$3 Million, which focused on enhancing the Campus' sustainability through energy-efficient infrastructure.
  • The DIREKT Project: A project funded by the ACP Science and Technology Programme of the European Union (EU) to promote renewable energy, with a budget of €993,207.00.
  • Energy Audits and Retrofitting: With funding from the IDB and various partners, this initiative retrofitted various Campus buildings with energy-efficient lighting, a move towards a more sustainable future for the University.

Beyond these projects, Natasha’s role in facilitating the Solar Window Tint Pilot Project and her involvement in energy efficiency efforts through the Public Sector Smart Energy Project highlight her commitment to environmental sustainability.
 
Championing Entrepreneurship and Scholarships
As the Chair of the FST Faculty Entrepreneurship Committee, Natasha has been instrumental in fostering a culture of innovation within FST. Her work includes identifying entrepreneurial opportunities, nurturing start-ups and linking staff with industry partners and funding agencies to transform ideas into viable projects. She also plays a key role in advising and supporting staff members in their submissions for the Campus Innovation Cave Hill Competition.

In addition to her entrepreneurial work, Natasha’s leadership extends to the Faculty Scholarship Committee, where she has overseen the development of several scholarship programmes. These initiatives aim to support students pursuing degrees in science and technology, ensuring that the next generation of leaders in these fields has the resources to succeed. Her contributions include drafting proposals for scholarships like the David Lewis Grant for ten (10) Department of Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics (CMP) students and the Christopher Lambert Science Grant for ten (10) Department of Biological and Chemical Sciences (BCS) students, both of which have provided financial support to students in need.

Contributing to Research, Innovation and Community Engagement
Natasha’s impact extends beyond project management to playing a pivotal role in the University’s broader research and innovation efforts. She has been an active participant in several committees and think tanks, including the University’s Office of Research, Innovation and Community Engagement (RICCH), where she helps coordinate research proposals and supports income-generating projects. Additionally, her involvement in organizing high-level conferences such as the Frontiers of Research in Caribbean Science and Technology (FORECAST) Conference reflects her commitment to advancing academic collaboration within the region and internationally.

In her role on the Grand Innovation Challenge Committee, Natasha was responsible for evaluating over a dozen project submissions from across the Caribbean, helping to steer the region’s innovation agenda forward.

Strengthening Academic Programmes and Supporting Students

Beyond her extensive project management work, Natasha has contributed significantly to the development and strengthening of both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes within the FST Faculty. Her efforts have included assisting with the delivery of lectures, supervising student projects, developing course outlines for new courses, and providing support in programme coordination. Notably, she has played an integral role in developing several key courses, including FPAS6000 Scientific Literature Review for postgraduate research students, the Introduction to Project Management course for the MSc. in Renewable Energy Management, and FPAS6030 Research Methodology for FST postgraduate students.
From 2012 to 2016, Natasha served as the Programme Officer for the MSc. Renewable Energy Management programme, where she was instrumental in coordinating the programme’s growth and success. She has also delivered lectures for several postgraduate and undergraduate courses, such as FPAS6030 Research Methodology, ERSC2004 Renewable Energy Sources and COMP6505 Electronic Commerce Project/Internship. Additionally, she provided assistance with programme coordination and taught courses within the MSc. in E-Commerce, MSc. Renewable Energy Management, and FPAS6000 Scientific Literature Review.

Natasha’s commitment to innovative teaching extends to her collaboration with Chalmers University of Technology (Sweden) in 2017, where she helped develop an E-learning module titled “Mobilizing Stakeholders for Sustainable Development”, which continues to offer valuable learning opportunities for students and professionals alike. Furthermore, in 2021, she served as both supervisor and second examiner for the ENSC3020 Case Study in Environmental Science course, further underscoring her hands-on approach to student development.

Additionally, Natasha has been instrumental in arranging paid summer internship programmes for sixteen (16) students from The UWI Cave Hill Campus, in collaboration with Water Management Ltd. and the IDB BRIDGE Programme. These internships provided students with invaluable exposure at local, regional and international firms and laboratories. Natasha also mentored two (2) students who successfully completed the IDB BRIDGE Learning and Innovation Platform, an initiative dedicated to connecting students with educational opportunities, jobs and internships in the field of sustainable energy.

Recognition and Personal Achievements
Natasha’s exemplary service has not gone unnoticed. She has received the Principal’s Award for Excellence twice - In 2011 in the Administrative and Technical Support (ATS) Staff Category and again in 2022 in the Senior Administrative and Professional Staff Category. In 2021, she was granted University Tenure, a significant milestone that reflects her long-standing contributions and commitment to the University’s mission.

Her accolades extend beyond the University’s walls, with Natasha being recognized for her role in the Small Developing Island Renewable Energy Knowledge and Technology Transfer Network project, which earned her an award from the University of Hamburg, Germany in 2012.

For Natasha, the work she does is not just about achieving personal success, but about creating lasting change. "I am truly honoured to receive this recognition from the Faculty. This recognition means a great deal to me, as it reflects not only my individual efforts but also my colleagues' incredible support and dedication," Natasha shares. "Every day, I am inspired by those around me who share a passion for making a difference. Together, we are creating meaningful change in our community, and I am grateful to be part of this amazing journey".

With an impressive academic background - holding a MSc. degree in Project Management and Evaluation, certifications in Project Management, and a Postgraduate Certificate in University Teaching - Natasha is a lifelong learner whose work consistently reflects the values of excellence and service.

Her enduring impact on the FST Faculty and the University is not only a reflection of her professional expertise but also of her deep commitment to the success of her colleagues, students and the wider UWI community.
