As part of our Faculty of Science and Technology’s (FST’s) 40th Anniversary Staff Recognition Programme, we proudly spotlight
Professor David Yawson, an inspiring figure whose interdisciplinary approach and transformative research are advancing the fields of agrifood systems and environmental resilience. Serving as both
Professor and Director of the Centre for Resource Management and Environmental Studies (CERMES), Professor Yawson embodies the spirit of intellectual curiosity, innovation and dedication that defines our FST Faculty’s legacy.
A Trailblazer in Agrifood and Environmental Sciences
Professor Yawson’s career is a testament to the power of blending natural and social sciences to address some of the most pressing issues facing our world today. His academic expertise spans agriculture, food systems management, environmental science and geographic information science - fields he intertwines seamlessly to form a holistic approach to teaching, research and applied problem-solving. His work extends from micro-level root systems and soil health to macro-scale issues such as global food trade, resource scarcity and the environmental challenges facing food production systems in resource-limited regions.
With a career boasting over seventy (70) peer-reviewed publications, Professor Yawson has become known internationally for his insights into how efficient management of water, land and nutrients can enhance food security and human resilience, even in the most challenging environments. His dedication to understanding and tackling these challenges positions him not only as a researcher but as a thought leader in sustainable agrifood systems, with a profound impact on both local and global scales.
Bridging Academia and Real-World Impact
Professor Yawson's influence extends beyond the academic world. Through his roles in advisory and consultancy capacities, he has contributed to numerous environmental and agricultural development projects across the Caribbean and in partnership with agencies such as the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA). His work has spanned continents, with teaching and research appointments in Ghana, the United Kingdom (UK), Algeria and the Caribbean, where he has enriched countless students' lives with his expertise in soil and water management, geographic information systems and remote sensing.
A Researcher and Educator with a Global Perspective
Professor Yawson’s interdisciplinary research interests have led to innovative studies on root system resilience in crops, exploring how certain plants can thrive in water- and nutrient-deficient environments. This critical work has implications for food security in vulnerable regions. His research also leverages geospatial technology to analyze changes in land use, offering insights that guide sustainable land management practices and identify environmental vulnerabilities in the face of climate change.
Throughout his career, Professor Yawson has remained committed to sharing his knowledge. As an editorial board member of the journal “
Agriculture” and an Associate Editor for the “
International Journal of Climate Change Strategies and Management”, he has contributed to shaping the scholarly discourse around these essential issues.
Championing Knowledge and Wisdom
Professor Yawson lives by the guiding principle, “
Every prudent man acts with knowledge”, a quote that reflects his commitment to informed decision-making and his belief in the transformative power of knowledge. It’s a philosophy he brings to every project, every lecture and every consultation. His ability to communicate complex concepts with clarity and enthusiasm has made him a valued mentor and educator.
