As part of our Faculty of Science and Technology's (FST’s) Staff Recognition Programme,
we are proud to highlight Dr. Henri Vallès, a dedicated Senior Lecturer in Ecology within our Department of Biological and Chemical Sciences (BCS). With a rich background and a profound commitment to the Caribbean's natural heritage, Dr. Vallès is making significant strides in environmental sustainability and research.
A Global Perspective Rooted in the Caribbean
Dr. Vallès' journey is as vibrant as the ecosystems he studies. Born of Haitian and Spanish descent, he has lived in both Haiti and Spain for many years. His academic path began with a BSc. in Biology from the University of Oviedo in Spain, followed by an MSc. in Natural Resource and Environmental Management from the Centre for Resource Management and Environmental Studies (CERMES) at The University of the West Indies (UWI), Cave Hill Campus in Barbados, and a PhD. in Biology from McGill University in Canada.
His work has taken him from teaching Biology in Haiti to researching the intricate coral reefs of St. Lucia, sparking a lifelong passion for tropical marine ecosystems. This passion deepened during his PhD research at the Bellairs Research Institute in Barbados, where he focused on coral reefs and reef fishes.

After a brief period as a Fisheries Consultant in Haiti, where he worked with the Fisheries Department, Dr. Vallès returned to The UWI Cave Hill Campus in 2010 as a Post-Doctoral Fellow. He officially joined the FST Academic Staff in 2011, bringing with him a wealth of experience and knowledge.

Pioneering Contributions to Sustainability
Dr. Vallès’ contributions extend beyond the classroom. His recent work has significant implications for socio-ecological and environmental sustainability policies, both locally and regionally. He has been instrumental in assessing the health of Barbados’ coral reefs and evaluating the impact of invasive marine species like the lionfish.

At the regional level, Dr. Vallès has led efforts to draft management plans and monitoring guides for the sustainability of small-scale fisheries that use fish aggregating devices (FADs) to target large pelagic species, such as tunas and billfishes. These fisheries are increasingly important to food security and the economies of insular Caribbean nations, highlighting Dr. Vallès' commitment to fostering sustainable practices in our marine environments.
Recognition and Vision
In recognition of his outstanding research accomplishments, Dr. Vallès was awarded the 2023 Principal’s Award for Excellence. His dedication to training the next generation of Caribbean researchers reflects his vision for the future. As he states, “
The insular Caribbean is a global hotspot of biodiversity... I see it as a key part of my mission to help train the new generation of young Caribbean researchers to ensure that we have enough research capacity within the region to help preserve our beneficial ecosystems and unique natural heritage”.
Join Us in Celebrating Dr. Vallès!
As we recognize Dr. Henri Vallès, we applaud his unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability, education and research. His efforts not only benefit our University but also contribute to the preservation of our invaluable ecosystems.
Thank you, Dr. Vallès, for your impactful work!
